3rd Meeting
Teachers and students which are working on the Multilateral Comenius Project “New clans: group and individuality”, met for the last time (this school year), from the 17th till the 21st May, in Domont, Paris in order to share the activities and experiences that have been going on at their schools, but above all, to draw conclusions of this first year of work.
Domont is located in the surroundings of Paris.
Paris is located in the north-bending arc of the river Seine and includes two islands, the Île Saint-Louis and the larger Île de la Cité, which form the oldest part of the city. Overall, the city is relatively flat, and the lowest elevation above sea level. Paris has several prominent hills, of which the highest is Montmartre. Much of contemporary Paris is the result of the vast mid-nineteenth century urban remodelling. For centuries, the city had been a labyrinth of narrow streets and half-timber houses, but, beginning iire quarters to make way for wide avenues lined with neo-classical stone buildings of bourgeoisie standing. Most of this 'new' Paris is the Paris we see today. The building code has seen few changes since, and the Second Empire plans are in many cases still followed. Many of Paris's important institutions are located outside the city limits. The financial (La Défense) business district, the main food wholesale market (Rungis), schools (École Polytechnique, HEC, ESSEC, INSEAD), research laboratories (in Saclay or Évry), the largest stadium (the Stade de France), and government offices (Ministry of Transportation) are located in the city's suburbs.
Our French partners prepared for us a fantastic week that we’ll never forget (we can state that by the students’ texts). We were received at school by teachers and the pupil’s families. They have prepared an admirable reception party.
Foreign students went to classes with their French friends while teachers met in order to share the work done till that moment. We have to thank the walks in the city of Paris; the picnics; the boat trip, everything. No one will forget the commitment of our French partners in trying to do their best so everyone could feel comfortable as if we were at home.

2nd meeting
Teachers and students which are working on the Multilateral Comenius Project “New Clans: Group and Individuality”, met again, from the 1st till the 5th of February, for the second time, in Tomelloso, Spain, in order to share the activities and experiences that have been going on at their schools.
Tomelloso, is located in the heart of the land of Quixote, and it’s a modern, active city, fully integrated into today´s changing world and able to face the challenges posed by present-day society. It is also conscious of its past and its culture, it maintains all of the values and traditions it has accumulated through time, and sees itself, naturally, as a city of La Mancha, its feet rooted firmly in the ground that witnesses the wanderings of the Quixote, that nobleman born of the illustrious pen of Cervantes in the city of Argamasilla de Alba.
Our Spanish partners prepared for us a fabulous week that we’ll never forget.
We were received at school with fantastic students’ performances that were really admirable. Foreign students went to classes with their Spanish friends while teachers met in order to share the work done till the moment. Students got along so well that when they had to say goodbye there were many tears, kisses and hugs!
We still remember the beautiful “LAGUNAS DE RUIDERA” that are a natural park, containing 15 lagoons which are located above the La Mancha plain; the “PEÑARROYA CASTLE AND RESERVOIR”; PINILLA and the HERMITAGE of the “VIRGEN DE LAS VIÑAS” and of course TOLEDO, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage as one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire and place of coexistence of Christian, Jewish and Moorish cultures. Everyone was delighted with the beautiful and rich monuments and ... architecture.
We can’t forget our reception at the Regional Ministry of Education and at the Town Hall, and also the gifts we’ve received.
We must say that Spanish people love eating and drinking, don’t they? Their gastronomy is delicious!
Above all, we really must say thank you to Mª Angelles, Victoria and Antonio.

Comenius in local ALAVIESKA-LEHTI newspaper 15. 10. 2009 in Finland
Comeniusmatka Portugaliin 4. – 10. 10. 2009
Tämän lukuvuoden alussa alkoi Alavieskan yhtenäiskoulussa keskiviikkoisin koulun jälkeen pyöriä Comenius- kerho, se on EU:n rahoittama projekti jossa opetellaan tutustumaan eri yhteistyömaiden kulttuuriin ja koulumaailmaan. Yhteistyömaita ovat: Iso- Britannia, Ranska, Espanja, Italia, Portugali ja Suomesta Merijärven yläaste ja Alavieskan koulu. Ensimmäinen matka Portugalin Santo Tirsoon oli suunnattu opettajille, mutta suomalaiset koulut saivat luvan ottaa kaksi oppilasta mukaansa. Tarkoitus oli asua isäntäperheissä ja kierrellä heidän mukanaan eri kohteissa pitkin Santo Tirson seutua. Matkalle lähti siis yhteensä neljä oppilasta ja kaksi opettajaa.
1.päivä, Lauantai 3.10.
Matkamme merijärveläisten Tarleenan, Marjutin ja Jaana opettajan kanssa alkoi lauantainai-iltana,kun lähdimme yöjunalla Tikkurilaa päin,mistä sunnuntai-aamuna lähti lentokone kohti Frankfurtia,jossa vaihdoimme konetta.Matka sujui kaikin puolin hyvin.
2.päivä, Sunnuntai.
Vihdoin perillä. Lentokentällä meitä oli vastassa Portugalin Comenius- vastaava opettaja ja isäntäperheemme. Jotkut isäntäperheiden vanhemmista eivät osanneet englantia ollenkaan,mikä tuotti alussa hieman ongelmia. Perheiden tytöt osasivat onneksi ihan kohtalaisesti englantia ja olimme saaneet kouluilta Portugalin sanakirjat, eli keskusteluakin saatiin aikaan.
3.päivä, Maanantai.
Matkasimme Portoon. Portoon lähdimme aamutuimaan junalla, matka ei ollut turhan pitkä, ja pääsimme ajoissa itse kaupunkiin. Portossa kiertelimme turistibussilla nähtävyyksiä. Vaikka Porto on Portugalin toiseksi suurin kaupunki, siellä oli yllättävän paljon vanhaa jäljellä kuten esimerkiksi asuintaloja ja kirkkoja. Mutta uuttakin löytyi.
4.päivä, Tiistai.
Menimme isäntäperheen tyttöjen kanssa kouluun.
Koulu oli miellyttävä kokemus,sillä oppilaat olivat todella mukavia ja kiinnostuneita meistä, ja vaikka luokka jossa olimme olikin tytövaltainen, luokkahenki oli todella myönteinen.
Koulu oli aivan erilainen verrattuna suomalaisiin kouluihin: Koulussa oli monta eri rakennusta,joissa luokat sijaitsivat.Tunnin alkua odotettiin ulkona luokan edessä olevassa "betonikarsinassa".Oppitunnit kestivät yleensä 90 min.Ruokatunnit kestivät ainakin 1,5 tuntia, ja sen aikana sai käydä kotona tai mennä keskustaan.Sai toki jäädä koulullekin syömään ja oleskelemaan.Jos koulu alkoi aamulla, se alkoi noin 8.30, mutta suuren oppilasmäärän vuoksi koulua saattoi olla vain iltapäivällä.Pisimmillään koulu loppui vasta 18.30.
5.päivä, Keskiviikko.
Koulua oli vain aamupäivästä. Huomasimme,että opettajatkaa eivät oikeen osanneet puhua englantia, joten oppitunnit alkoivat käydä todella tylsiksi. Iltapäivällä lähdettyämme pois koulusta menimme katsomaan läheistä linnaa ja siinä ohessa olevaa puolustus rakennelmaa. Kun jäi vielä aikaa, kävimme myös katsomassa 1000 vuotta eKr vanhaa roomalaista rauniota, josta ei ollut enää paljoakaan jäljellä.
6.päivä, Torstai.
Aamulla kävimme katselemassa paikallisten suosimia rantoja, jotka sijaitsi muutaman kilometrin päässä Portosta.Aurinko paistoi ja oli ihanan lämmintä! Kuin Suomen kesä. Iltapäivällä menimme kouluun. Illalla mentiin kaikki isäntäperheineen yhdessä illallisella ulkona. Ilta venyi jo yön puolelle, kun kiersimme myös ruuan jälkeen hieman kaupungilla.
7.päivä, Perjantai.
Viimeinen päivä koulussa. Koulupäivä sujui normaalisti, mutta oli ikävä lähteä pois koulusta,kun oli kiintynyt paljon luokkaamme ja muihin oppilaisiin.
Illalla kävimme taas koko isolla porukalla ulkona syömässä, tällä kertaa oli myös opettajat mukana illallisella.
8.päivä, Launatai.10.10.
Herätys kello neljän aikaan aamulla ehtiäksemme Porton lentokentälle ennen klo 6.50, jolloin lento lähtisi.Siellä sanoimme hyvästit rakkaille perheillemme ja alkoi pitkä kotimatka.Samalla tavalla kuin tullessamme vaihdoimme konetta Frankfurtissa ja Tikkurilasta matkasimme junalla Ylivieskaan,jossa olimme jo ennen puoltayötä.
Mitä me nyt tästä saimme...
...Paljon uusia ystäviä,
...opimme tuntemaan Portugalia ja Porton seutua, kulttuuria ja historiaa tarkemmin,
...löysimme paljon uusia ruokia joita kannattaisi kokeilla myös Suomessa,
...opimme, että Portugalissa on halpaa
...Vaikka sää olikin aika sateinen, siellä ei ole kylmä ja upea maa siinäkin valossa
...Portugalissa ei ole talvisin lunta kuin yhdessa paikassa jota kutsutaan suomeksi tähtivuoreksi.
...Ja todella mukavan muiston mieliimme loppu iäksi.

Tämän lukuvuoden alussa alkoi Alavieskan yhtenäiskoulussa keskiviikkoisin koulun jälkeen pyöriä Comenius- kerho, se on EU:n rahoittama projekti jossa opetellaan tutustumaan eri yhteistyömaiden kulttuuriin ja koulumaailmaan. Yhteistyömaita ovat: Iso- Britannia, Ranska, Espanja, Italia, Portugali ja Suomesta Merijärven yläaste ja Alavieskan koulu. Ensimmäinen matka Portugalin Santo Tirsoon oli suunnattu opettajille, mutta suomalaiset koulut saivat luvan ottaa kaksi oppilasta mukaansa. Tarkoitus oli asua isäntäperheissä ja kierrellä heidän mukanaan eri kohteissa pitkin Santo Tirson seutua. Matkalle lähti siis yhteensä neljä oppilasta ja kaksi opettajaa.
1.päivä, Lauantai 3.10.
Matkamme merijärveläisten Tarleenan, Marjutin ja Jaana opettajan kanssa alkoi lauantainai-iltana,kun lähdimme yöjunalla Tikkurilaa päin,mistä sunnuntai-aamuna lähti lentokone kohti Frankfurtia,jossa vaihdoimme konetta.Matka sujui kaikin puolin hyvin.
2.päivä, Sunnuntai.
Vihdoin perillä. Lentokentällä meitä oli vastassa Portugalin Comenius- vastaava opettaja ja isäntäperheemme. Jotkut isäntäperheiden vanhemmista eivät osanneet englantia ollenkaan,mikä tuotti alussa hieman ongelmia. Perheiden tytöt osasivat onneksi ihan kohtalaisesti englantia ja olimme saaneet kouluilta Portugalin sanakirjat, eli keskusteluakin saatiin aikaan.
3.päivä, Maanantai.
Matkasimme Portoon. Portoon lähdimme aamutuimaan junalla, matka ei ollut turhan pitkä, ja pääsimme ajoissa itse kaupunkiin. Portossa kiertelimme turistibussilla nähtävyyksiä. Vaikka Porto on Portugalin toiseksi suurin kaupunki, siellä oli yllättävän paljon vanhaa jäljellä kuten esimerkiksi asuintaloja ja kirkkoja. Mutta uuttakin löytyi.
4.päivä, Tiistai.
Menimme isäntäperheen tyttöjen kanssa kouluun.
Koulu oli miellyttävä kokemus,sillä oppilaat olivat todella mukavia ja kiinnostuneita meistä, ja vaikka luokka jossa olimme olikin tytövaltainen, luokkahenki oli todella myönteinen.
Koulu oli aivan erilainen verrattuna suomalaisiin kouluihin: Koulussa oli monta eri rakennusta,joissa luokat sijaitsivat.Tunnin alkua odotettiin ulkona luokan edessä olevassa "betonikarsinassa".Oppitunnit kestivät yleensä 90 min.Ruokatunnit kestivät ainakin 1,5 tuntia, ja sen aikana sai käydä kotona tai mennä keskustaan.Sai toki jäädä koulullekin syömään ja oleskelemaan.Jos koulu alkoi aamulla, se alkoi noin 8.30, mutta suuren oppilasmäärän vuoksi koulua saattoi olla vain iltapäivällä.Pisimmillään koulu loppui vasta 18.30.
5.päivä, Keskiviikko.
Koulua oli vain aamupäivästä. Huomasimme,että opettajatkaa eivät oikeen osanneet puhua englantia, joten oppitunnit alkoivat käydä todella tylsiksi. Iltapäivällä lähdettyämme pois koulusta menimme katsomaan läheistä linnaa ja siinä ohessa olevaa puolustus rakennelmaa. Kun jäi vielä aikaa, kävimme myös katsomassa 1000 vuotta eKr vanhaa roomalaista rauniota, josta ei ollut enää paljoakaan jäljellä.
6.päivä, Torstai.
Aamulla kävimme katselemassa paikallisten suosimia rantoja, jotka sijaitsi muutaman kilometrin päässä Portosta.Aurinko paistoi ja oli ihanan lämmintä! Kuin Suomen kesä. Iltapäivällä menimme kouluun. Illalla mentiin kaikki isäntäperheineen yhdessä illallisella ulkona. Ilta venyi jo yön puolelle, kun kiersimme myös ruuan jälkeen hieman kaupungilla.
7.päivä, Perjantai.
Viimeinen päivä koulussa. Koulupäivä sujui normaalisti, mutta oli ikävä lähteä pois koulusta,kun oli kiintynyt paljon luokkaamme ja muihin oppilaisiin.
Illalla kävimme taas koko isolla porukalla ulkona syömässä, tällä kertaa oli myös opettajat mukana illallisella.
8.päivä, Launatai.10.10.

Comenius-matka Espanjan Tomellosoon 31.1. – 6.2.2010
Sunnuntaina lähdimme kahdeksan aikaan aamulla Ylivieskan juna-asemalta kohti Helsinkiä. Mukanamme olivat Leena Laulainen, Päivi Saarela, Taina Palola ja Merijärviset nuoret Markus Nummi, Teemu Tohola, Eeva Saukko ja Maria Hakala. Helsinki-Vantaan lentoasemalla saimme shoppailla turvatarkastuksen jälkeen lentokentällä, koska kone lähti vasta viideltä. Kun olimme Madridissa perillä, otimme pikkubussin ja lähdimme ajamaan kohti Tomellosoa. Kaikki olivat väsyneitä ja nukkuivat autossa. Kahdentoista aikaan olimme perillä Tomellosossa Alto Guadianan koululla. Perheet ottivat meidät iloisesti vastaan ja lähdimme heidän koteihinsa syömään ja nukkumaan.
Maanantaiaamuna koulu alkoi 8:30. Tunteja oli yhteensä kuusi ja koulu loppui 14:25. Sen jälkeen alkoi siesta, jonka aikana söimme ja vietimme vapaa-aikaa. Illalla meille esiteltiin Tomellosoa. Myöhemmällä muiden maiden oppilaat saapuivat perheisiinsä Tomellosoon.
Tiistaina meillä oli muutama tunti koulua ja sen jälkeen lähdimme katsomaan meitä varten harjoiteltuja esityksiä. Siinä oli mukana muun muassa kaksi espanjalaista kansantanssia ja voimisteluesitys. Saimme myös katsoa erilaisia videoita Tomellososta. Osa porukasta kävi illemmalla katsomassa Ruideran laguuneja ja puolustuslinnaa nimeltä Peñarroya.
Seuraavana päivänä lähdimme kaikkien ulkomaalaisten kanssa bussilla Toledoon. Isäntäoppilaamme eivät tulleet ollenkaan mukaan. Pääsimme käymään paikallisessa opetusministeriössä ja saimme kaksi espanjankielistä kirjaa lahjaksi. Söimme opetusministeriössä simpukkapaellaa. Toledossa kiertelimme ja katsoimme erilaisia nähtävyyksiä. Kävimme myös katsomassa Pyhän Maryn katedraalia, joka oli erittäin kaunis ja suuri.
Toledossa saimme kierrellä itseksemme huimat 15 minuuttia. Illalla kiertelimme Tomellosossa, mutta osa porukasta oli kotonaan lepäämässä.
Torstaina tunnelma alkoi olla jo haikea, koska seuraavana päivänä täytyi lähteä kotiin. Viikko oli mennyt todella nopeaa. Iltapäivällä kuitenkin lähdimme iloisin mielin Pinillaan piknikille. Meillä oli todella mukavaa vaikka vähän pisarteli. Saimme maistaa kahdenlaista espanjalaista perinneruokaa. Pinillasta saavuttuamme jotkut lähtivät pelaamaan ja katsomaan jalkapalloa, jota koulukaverimme pelasivat. Illalla kävimme syömässä koko porukalla pizzeriassa ja sitten lähdimme käymään discossa. Illalla satoi vähän, se oli ainut päivä jolloin satoi, muuten ilma oli ollut mahtava.
Perjantai-aamuna itkettiin oikein porukalla, kun piti lähteä. Kymmenen aikaan koulun pihalle saapui bussi johon meidän täytyi mennä. Hyvästelimme haikein mielin ystävämme ja lähdimme kohti Madridia. Madridissa olimme ennen yhtä. Pääsimme Metropol-hostelsiimme viemään tavaramme, sitten lähdimme kohti McDonald’sia ja sen jälkeen kohti kuuluisaa taidemuseo Pradoa. Kiertelimme taidemuseossa tunnin ja sen jälkeen saimme pari tuntia aikaa shoppailulle. Kävimme El Corte Inglés –tavaratalossa kiertelemässä ja katselemassa.
Lauantaina piti herätä jo viiden aikaan aamulla, koska lentokentälle oli lähdettävä jo kuudelta. Pääsimme lentokentälle ongelmitta ja kone lähti kymmeneltä. Kaikkia väsytti todella paljon ja nukuimme lentokoneessa. Ulkona ilma oli aivan mahtava kun lensimme pilvien yläpuolella. Kun pääsimme Helsinkiin, meidän täytyi juosta nopeasti taksiin, että kerkesimme junaan. Junamatka sujui lähes ongelmitta ja olimme kymmenen aikaan Ylivieskassa.

The minorities of Finland
Sámi People
The Sámi people are the original inhabitants of Lapland and have lived in the area for thousands of years. They have their own language and culture which is based on their close relationship with nature. In the past they lived by hunting, fishing and farming reindeer and they were nomadic. Nowadays, they have more modern lifestyle but there are still reindeer farmers in Lapland. There are about 8000 Sámi people and about a third speaks sami language as their mother tongue. More of Finland’s indigenous Sámi people live in the Helsinki area than in any single locality in their arctic homeland, but they face challenges in maintaining their language, culture and identity. Sami people have also used the name of the Lapps.

Sami National Day is 6th of February. That day was organized the first general meeting of Sámi in Trondheim year 1917.

Swedish speaking Finns are in Finland living and Swedish talking people. They were born in Finland, and if someone who speaks Swedish moves to Finland are not. There are about 340 000 Swedish speaking Finns in Finland. They are Finns and anyone doesn’t think they would be foreigners.
Swedish is vernacular language in Finland and everyone should speak it, exspecially people who work on service careers. We must study it in school.
Finland has been part of Sweden about 300 years ago. Then Swedish was an officialese. It was really difficult for people who speak Finnish. Finnish was taken to official language with Swedish and these two languages have stayed since then.
Swedish speaking Finns are falling away, on year 1900 12.9% inhabitants of Finland was Swedish speaking Finns and now just 5.4%.
If you know the Moomies, you should know Tove Jansson. She is Swedish speaking Finn and she has written Moomies (: Other Swedish speaking Finns are rally driver, Marcus Grönholm, singer and model Kim Herold, first president of Finland Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg and actress Maria Sid.
Romani people in Finland
Romanis are minority people in Finland. There is about 10 000 romanis in Finland. Romani people came from India. They came to Finland in the 16th century via Baltic countries. The biggiest part of them speaks finnish nowadays but they also have their own language. It has borrowed words from the nearby Slavic languages and also from Hungarian and Turkish languages. When they came to Finland they got despised at first because they were vagabonds and people thought that they were different. Romanis have their own costumes called ”röijy.”
Romanis have played an important role in the arts, sciences and engineering. There are also some celebrity romanis in Finland, like Remu Aaltonen who belonged in the famous finnish rockband called The Hurriganes and Amadeus Lundberg who is singer in Finland.

Alavieska comprehensive school
There are 374 pupils and 28 teachers in our school. Pupils ages are between 6 to 15 years.
We have school on 5 days on week. School starts at 8.am and ends usually at 2.pm. We have 45-minute lessons and 15-minute breaks. We have free school-lunch, which we eat at 11 am. Then we have a longer break , when we can play volleyball, hang with friends and so on Usually we have to go out on breaks, but if it rains or in winter when it is so cold we can stay inside.
We don’t have schooluniform, so everyone cans wear clothes and accesorizes they like.
Pupils, who lives near comes school by bike, moped or on foot but pupils who lives far from school come by bus and school offers that.
There are some clubs in our school, like floorball-club, volleyball-club, peer counselling group and Comenius-club :D
We have compulsory subject like maths, finnish, biology and so on, but we have to also choose some electives. You can choose art, technical work, textile work, music and home economics, german, PE, agriculture and forestry.

We have a nice gymnasium and good materials to different games. Usually we have two hours when we have p.e.. Sometimes we go to swimming and bowling and that kind of stuff. We have our own soccer field where we play also baseball. Our p.e. teachers are very nice. The gym also is our assembly hall, we celebrate Independence day, Christmas, Valentine’s day and closing ceremony of course!

Facts about Alavieska, Finland
Alavieska is small town, near coast, establish in 1879. There are about 2800 inhabitants. Land area of Alavieska is 253,03km² and land area is mostly flat. River called Kalajoki goes throw Alavieska. Alavieska has shared in seven “villages”: Centre,( Saarenkylä, Jukulainen,) Taluskylä, Someronkylä, Kääntä and Kähtävä.
Alavieska is a nice and beautiful small village between two big cities. Here is a lots of countryside, but we also have many own services: restaurant, library, three grocery stores, bank, swimming hall, motel.. etc. And of course, if there is something you don’t find from Alavieska, you can always go to those two cities, Ylivieska and Kalajoki. For young people we have a youth centre, which is open every Monday, Thursday and Friday. There you can play billiard, hang out with your friends, watch TV and things like that. Sometimes we also have a disco in our youth centre.
